constitution 101 free college course

Our daughter, who is in college, recently took a course on her own time, as she was interested in learning the history and facts about the United States Constitution. She began by reading the Constitution (she carries a pocket version that we picked up in Washington, D.C. a few years ago), then she took this course by Hillsdale College. She highly recommends it to us and wanted me to share it with you.

I’ve highlighted courses by Hillsdale College in the past. It is a university that is one of America’s oldest schools. It has remained true to its founding and is an excellent source of history and literature teachings to this day.

The Constitution 101 course by Hillsdale College is on “the meaning and history of the Constitution.” The course is made up of 12 lectures. Here are the titles of each lecture:

  1. The Theory of the Declaration and the Constitution
  2. Natural Rights and the American Revolution
  3. Majority Tyranny and the Necessity of the Union
  4. Consent of the Governed and the Separation of Powers
  5. “To Secure These Rights” : Property, Morality, and Religion
  6. Slavery and the Roots of the Secession Crisis
  7. Secession and Civil War
  8. The Progressive Rejection of the Founding
  9. The New Deal and the Rise of the Administrative State
  10. The Administrative State Today
  11. Post-Sixties Liberalism and Contemporary Politics
  12. A Path to Restoration

The average lecture length is about 30 minutes, so with this course, and some accompanying reading, you could apply high school credit in history or civics to your student’s transcript.

I will be taking the course alongside our teenager – there is much to learn in this area!

Balancing Homeschooling while Working From Home

At times, well-intentioned advice suggests that dedicating an entire day to homeschooling leaves no room for a job during regular hours. This is not necessarily so. My husband and I owned a garden center for a few years while also homeschooling. After that, I had an online business while homeschooling. We did not “only work … Read More about Balancing Homeschooling and Working From Home – a Realistic Approach

making the transition from public school to homeschool

We did what you’re doing, or thinking about doing. Our eldest two went to public school in our little town, and it was just fine, we didn’t have any problems, but I missed them. Also, it was a hassle packing up the baby and toddler to commute the school kids from two different school locations, … Read More about Going from Public School to Home School? Here’s My Advice
