Free College Courses that Transfer to a University

by grade· college

8 Jun

A month or two ago, a friend told us of an online education company that was offering free college courses due to the quarantine. It was their way of helping. It seemed too good to be true, so I had our daughter, who is enrolled in a four-year university, to take a course and see if the credits transfer. They did! She saved $1,200 by not taking the course at her school! She’s enrolled in three more free courses now.

The courses include basics such as History 101 and 102, Statistics, Intro to Psychology, Art History, English Composition, Speech, and more.

free courses for college credit through july 31st

Sofia offers college-level courses and corporate courses. Usually, they cost money (and some still do). Due to the quarantine, and students being out of school and online, Sofia wanted to offer free access to their “ACE-recommended courses for college credit.” The free offer is good until July 31, 2020.

transfer the free course credits to your university

Our daughter did not have to pay to transfer the credits, as her university retrieved them for free. See if yours will do the same; if not, there is a small fee for transcripts (about $10). That is the only fee you’ll run into – no textbooks needed!

how to access the free college courses

Remember, the courses are only free through July 31, 2020. It is Sofia’s way of helping out during the worldwide pandemic and quarantine.

For a list of the free courses, visit Sofia here.

For a list of colleges that automatically transfer credits from Sofia, and to see a list of universities that have been successfully sent transcripts, visit this page.

I posted before trying out Sofia – you can see the original post here.

[…] I heard of this offer through a homeschooling friend and wanted to pass it on, but I have not looked into it deeply and am not familiar with Sophia. So I’m passing this one on to you to do your own homework, and see if it’s a good fit for your family. I also passed it onto our college daughter to see if she could save on a class or two! Our daughter successfully transferred a completed Sofia course to her four-year university! It saved her $1,200 in what she would have paid her university for that course. Read the update here. […]

Balancing Homeschooling while Working From Home

At times, well-intentioned advice suggests that dedicating an entire day to homeschooling leaves no room for a job during regular hours. This is not necessarily so. My husband and I owned a garden center for a few years while also homeschooling. After that, I had an online business while homeschooling. We did not “only work … Read More about Balancing Homeschooling and Working From Home – a Realistic Approach

making the transition from public school to homeschool

We did what you’re doing, or thinking about doing. Our eldest two went to public school in our little town, and it was just fine, we didn’t have any problems, but I missed them. Also, it was a hassle packing up the baby and toddler to commute the school kids from two different school locations, … Read More about Going from Public School to Home School? Here’s My Advice
