I was raised overseas, so it is important to me that our children learn about the history and culture of places other than their home country. Cultural studies are a big part of our homeschool.
When our oldest children were little, I discovered the St. Nicholas Center and began a beautiful tradition in our family. Each December, I use the St. Nicholas Center to teach all four of our children the story of the real Santa Claus. While learning about St. Nicholas, we learn traditions and make crafts and recipes from around the world. St. Nicholas Day, December 6th, is a big deal in many countries!
The St. Nicholas Center website is beautiful and large — it has links, photos, recipes, crafts, stories, and more for those who would like to learn about the original Santa Claus.
How to Learn History & Cultural Studies through St. Nicholas Day:
Visit the St. Nicholas Center to see all the site has to offer. One of our favorite pages is Around the World. In our homeschool, we each have a country – or several! – that we want to study that year. This page lists many countries along with their traditions and culture.
Happy St. Nicholas Day from our family to yours!
