2 FREE DVDs on Current Events (in your snail mail!)

civics· high school· middle school· subjects

17 Nov

Did you know you can receive free DVDs on current events topics to arrive in your snail mail? They include a free Teacher Guide and there are no catches.

The videos are created by John Stossel, formerly of ABC News and of Fox Business News. Stossel in the Classroom will mail you two free DVDs on current events topics, shipped free!   Although the content is relevant to what’s currently going on in the world, the opinions may not be what your family prefers, so you may want to preview the content (I’ll tell you how below). In our homeschool, we like our teens to listen to different opinions while forming their own.  We watch the DVDs together, and then have many debates over the topics.

I’d suggest these DVDs especially for high schoolers, though they may also be interesting to older middle school and college age students.

The 2018 DVD includes fourteen video segments covering social studies, civics, economics, government, science, law, business, and psychology. A few of the titles: Private Parks, Why Politicians Don’t Cut Spending, and Private Frontier: Space. There are subtitles in both English and Spanish.  There is also an accompanying Teacher Guide (also in English and Spanish) containing lesson plans, graphic organizers, activity suggestions, viewing guides, assessment, and vocabulary.

View segments of each of the 2018 episodes to screen them, or to prepare your lesson before the DVD arrives  (scroll down the page for 2017 segments).

How to Order the Free Current Events DVDS — they’ll come in  your snail mail!

You’ll have to do a quick registration (since they’re mailing it to your address, that makes sense, right?).  I haven’t received any spam or junk mail from Stossel in the Classroom; just the DVDs!

Visit Stossel in the Classroom to order the  2017 and 2018 DVDs. They will be shipped free (US only, probably?). Order your free DVDs at Stossel in the Classroom

Want another free current events DVD, from a different source?

I reviewed and highlighted Izzit a long time ago, and haven’t taken time to update that post, but it looks like they’ll still mail you a free DVD on current events, too!

note: I moved the comments since 2010 to this latest post as I redirected those old posts to this new one, since we may no longer request previous years’ DVDs.

I’m still waiting for my dvds to arrive. I’m guessing with all of the holidays in there, they were delayed. I signed up after reading the second post.

I hope you get them soon, Heather!  I think it took about 8 weeks for ours to arrive.  It was long enough to have forgotten about it. 🙂

Balancing Homeschooling while Working From Home

At times, well-intentioned advice suggests that dedicating an entire day to homeschooling leaves no room for a job during regular hours. This is not necessarily so. My husband and I owned a garden center for a few years while also homeschooling. After that, I had an online business while homeschooling. making the transition from public school to homeschool

We did what you’re doing, or thinking about doing. Our eldest two went to public school in our little town, and it was just fine, we didn’t have any problems, but I missed them.
