The University of South Florida offers a reading treasure trove for an educator — free audios of many popular stories and poems.  They describe Lit2Go like this:. They want to “support literacy by providing access to recordings of historically and culturally significant literature.”

Many of the audios are accompanied by the literature, so your student can read along with the recording.Free Audiobooks of the Classics

Lit2Go is a free online collection of stories and poems in audiobook (mp3) format. You can:

  • Download the files to your phone or other player and listen on the go
  • Listen to the files on your computer
  • View the text on a webpage and read along as you listen
  • Print out the stories and poems to make your own book.

You can browse Lit2Go by “authors, books, genres, collections or readibility.” Browsing through the Lit2Go archives by author, I found some of our favorites such as Jane Austen, Thornton W. Burgess, and good old Abraham Lincoln.  Browsing by book title, I found such gems as The Merchant of Venice and “Hickory, Dickory, Dock” and even some that just make me curious as to whether my students would consider them gems or not, like Philosophy and Fun of Algebra.

You may also search the database by reading level, K-12. The results will show how long the audio is, and how many words are in the passage (or book, poem, etc.).

Visit Lit2Go to listen to the free audiobooks of classics.

This is wonderful Lori, my 10 year old has taken over my Ipod and loves to have new things to listen to. I am thrilled to have her listening and gaining so many great ideas from classics. Thanks so much for your work

Balancing Homeschooling while Working From Home

At times, well-intentioned advice suggests that dedicating an entire day to homeschooling leaves no room for a job during regular hours. This is not necessarily so. My husband and I owned a garden center for a few years while also homeschooling. After that, I had an online business while homeschooling. We did not “only work … Read More about Balancing Homeschooling and Working From Home – a Realistic Approach

Also, it was a hassle packing up the baby and toddler to commute the school kids from two different school locations, … Read More about Going from Public School to Home School? Here’s My Advice
