Free Reading Program for Struggling (or Beginning) Readers

Stairway to Reading is a reading program especially for those students who struggle with reading.  It was created for elementary-aged students, though anyone can benefit from the program, including reading-ambitious preschoolers (I had only one of those out of four children!).

To begin, the Stairway to Reading program offers a short, free diagnostic test so you’ll know which level to begin (this will also give you an assessment of your preschooler’s readiness for the program).

The Stairway to Reading program includes lessons, flashcards, games, reading material and more, all for … of course, free.

They prefer that you enter the site here, so they can “follow up on the effectiveness of our program and get your ideas for improvement.

I like to see what I’m getting into before giving out my email address, and if you do as well, here are some direct links to the free reading program’s materials:

  • free reading diagnostic test, and an introduction to the program
  • 41 reading lesson plans
  • phonics & reading flashcards
  • a 129-page ebook full of reading material for the 41 reading lessons

Visit the Stairway to Reading page to view other materials, such as “Reading Bingo,” “Reading Crazy Letters,” a checklist, and graphs.

Balancing Homeschooling while Working From Home

At times, well-intentioned advice suggests that dedicating an entire day to homeschooling leaves no room for a job during regular hours. This is not necessarily so. My husband and I owned a garden center for a few years while also homeschooling. After that, I had an online business while homeschooling. We did not “only work … Read More about Balancing Homeschooling and Working From Home – a Realistic Approach

making the transition from public school to homeschool

We did what you’re doing, or thinking about doing. Our eldest two went to public school in our little town, and it was just fine, we didn’t have any problems, but I missed them. Also, it was a hassle packing up the baby and toddler to commute the school kids from two different school locations, … Read More about Going from Public School to Home School? Here’s My Advice
