Free Computer Coding Courses

I found a site where you, or your child, can learn to code for free. Wait, wait, don’t look away yet…coding is not that boring! According to Bill Gates, the creators of Facebook and Dropbox, and even will.i.am, coding is essential to modern students, yet most schools are not teaching it.

Since they noticed there is a huge need for coding yet an educational lack in teaching it, they created a non-profit website where you can learn computer coding for free.

Your student can learn how to program computers, create websites, and create apps.  There are no dry videos or lectures or textbooks.  You’ll learn code through interactive lessons. You’ll learn programming such as: JavaScript, Ruby, Python, HTML, CSS and others.

A friend of mine owns a social media business, and he says programmers are in demand!  I don’t know what our 16yo son is going to do after high school, but this is a skill he may as well have under his belt, so he is working through the free computer coding lessons at Code Academy.

Interested in going further with your coding knowledge? At the Codeacademy Lab, work on coding for free without downloading a program.

My 13 yr old aspie granddaughter stays glued to the computer. When I showed her the first lesson, she spent the rest of the afternoon working on it. This is an awesome resource to tear her away from her usual fare. Thanks!

I'm hoping to work through it, too.  It's a good one for us to do alongside the teens. I have a feeling they'll surpass us in this area, though!

I would guess over age 12, but if a child is very interested in computers, they could do it younger.

Balancing Homeschooling while Working From Home

At times, well-intentioned advice suggests that dedicating an entire day to homeschooling leaves no room for a job during regular hours. This is not necessarily so. My husband and I owned a garden center for a few years while also homeschooling. After that, I had an online business while homeschooling. We did not “only work … Read More about Balancing Homeschooling and Working From Home – a Realistic Approach

making the transition from public school to homeschool

We did what you’re doing, or thinking about doing. Our eldest two went to public school in our little town, and it was just fine, we didn’t have any problems, but I missed them. Also, it was a hassle packing up the baby and toddler to commute the school kids from two different school locations, … Read More about Going from Public School to Home School? Here’s My Advice
