Free Spelling Curriculum for Elementary & High School

K12 created a free Spelling Curriculum for grades K-5 and for High School.  The free lessons cover academic subjects taught at particular grade levels (for example, the 5th grade spelling list includes 5th grade science words).  The lists also include Fry’s 1,000 most commonly used English words.

I usually don’t recommend sites with many ads, and K12 has far more than I’d prefer sending you to, but these spelling lists are too useful to ignore.

The 1st-5th Elementary Spelling Curriculum includes:

  • weekly spelling lists
  • printable worksheets
  • dictation sentences

The material for each grade spans a full school year, 36 weeks. The lists cover academic vocabulary words that a child may be learning at his or her grade level.

The High School Spelling Curriculum is a 36-week program

A lot of research was put into developing this curriculum. The high school spelling lists include the most commonly misspelled words.  This curriculum is especially for 9th-12th grade students, but you may find it also useful for middle schoolers (and yourself!).

How to access the Free Spelling Curriculum:

If you’re looking for a spelling program that’s already laid out for you, check out K-12’s spelling curriculum and see if it’ll be a good fit for you!

k12 does NOT offer free spelling lists…you have to pay to access them.

I’ve been trying to access the site since you posted this, but I still can’t get to the site through the link. Do we have to be members of K12 to get the spelling lists?

Tara, hmmm, I’m getting it to open on a PC using Firefox (in case any of that info is helpful). Try going directly to this first grade page: http://www.k12reader.com/first-grade-spelling-words/
If you’d like other grades, or if you’d just like me to send you the direct link of the pdfs, let me know!

I looked through the first grade spelling list and this is wonderful! It’s exactly what I’m looking for but for the second grade. When I use the link it takes me to K12reader dot com which seems to be a subscription… ? do you happen to have a link for the second grade spelling list?

Hi, Tiffaney! I was able to access the 2nd grade list. I hope you can as well. This is a direct link to the Master List for 2nd Grade: http://www.k12reader.com/spelling/2nd_grade_spelling_words_master_list.pdf . I was also able to access the Student Materials on this page: http://www.k12reader.com/second-grade-spelling-words/ . Let me know if that doesn’t help!

I was able to get to it just now, but, goodness, there are a lot of ads on that site! If you can’t get past the ads to see it, try going with an ad blocker (or the Brave browser) turned on.
