Geography can be a fun subject to teach in your homeschool! There are plenty of maps online, but sometimes it’s more interesting to learn with our hands. I found five ways to teach geography. Each of these ideas could be used for studying countries, provinces, or states.
1. Create a map from pretty cardstock or scrapbooking paper with this paper map tutorial from designerAmber Packer. She includes a printable map of the United States in the download instructions for this project.
2. Embroider counties, states, provinces, or countries that mean something special to you – perhaps the locations each of you were born, or where family lives. Here are the instructions for embroidering maps onto cardstock paper. This project is perfect for younger children, as you use a large tapestry needle and are stitching into paper.
4. Here’s an easy project! Purchase a puzzle map, and add strip magnets to the back. You’ll be done with this project in minutes, and the kids will play with it for many hours! See the easy project instructions for this magnet puzzle at Natalme.
4. Create a paper mache globe from a balloon, newspaper, and printable maps. This paper mache globe project from One Charming Party is easy for the kids to do!
5. This project is best created by mom or dad or a teenager. You’ll cut out a map of a country from purchased or recycled corkboard. Outline the states or provinces with a sharpie. Then let the younger ones pin flags to show where you’ve been, or to show distances between locations. Here are the instructions for this corkboard map by Creating Really Awesome Free Things.
