My Favorite Public School Teacher Helped Me Be a Better Homeschool Teacher

for the teacher· thoughts from my homeschool

1 Sep

As a child, I attended public school, private boarding school, and homeschool.  I had many teachers, but the one who impacted my life the most was my high school public school teacher.  In her freshman English class, writing came alive for me. Sentences were not just diagrammed, but written, and adjectives and adverbs became my useful friends. Although I have long forgotten her name, I still use this teacher’s instruction every time I write.

This high school English teacher not only taught me about the mechanics of writing, but she believed in me. I was given a role as the teacher’s assistant for one of her classes, and there I learned the most valuable lesson of all:  I learned how to teach.  I learned that education did not need to be boring, grammar did not need to be completed on a worksheet, and I learned anyone can learn anything they want to learn.  Again, although I have long forgotten her name, I still use this teacher’s methods every time I homeschool our four children.

Freely Educate is written for those, like our family, who don't want the box. There are many places for "box-thinkers" to go. This place is for those who think outside the box. I hope to give you affirmation and advice on bravely choosing to educate creatively and individually. - Lori Seaborg
