My Back to Homeschool Shopping List

general

30 Jul
Returning home from errands last week, I told our 10-year-old to close her eyes and sniff as I handed her a little box. “Crayons!” she guessed correctly (and excitedly).  Do you remember the smell of new crayons?  I love all of the scents of a new school year, from crayons to paper, pencils, binders, books…all of it.

Here are the most essential items on our family’s back-to-homeschool shopping list:

Carolina Pad 6
  1. Pencils: I prefer the highest quality wooden pencils; not mechanical pencils with their ever-breaking tips
  2. College-ruled paper:  I’ve always liked the narrow spacing, but any lined paper will do, from Kindergarten writing pads to wide ruled paper.
  3. Binders:  we use 3-ring notebooks to store assignments and our completed schoolwork
  4. Page protectors:  this is the Most Essential item on my list.  We page protect all school work worth keeping
  5. Colored pencils:  Our artsy 10yo requested these be added to her list
  6. Markers in different thicknesses:  We use markers for studying artists
  7. Crayons:  Because, you know, they’re important no matter your age
  8. Calendar:  I like to have a huge desktop calendar for me, and a wall calendar for the homeschool room
  9. Journal: It’s important to me that the children journal daily.  They can write whatever they like, with the promise that nobody needs to read it.  They keep two journals:  a personal one, and a spiritual one
  10. Scissors:  Since last year’s scissors are hiding, we have to buy another pair.  Or two.  Or three
  11. Glue sticks: Because I prefer glue sticks to pourable (ie. tip-clogged) glue
  12. Pencil/Pen Pouch:  These pouches hold a small ruler, erasers, pencils, a hard candy…having a pouch helps lessen the amount of time we spend looking for pencils, etc.

What’s on your Back to School shopping list?

Freely Educate is written for those, like our family, who don't want the box. There are many places for "box-thinkers" to go. This place is for those who think outside the box. I hope to give you affirmation and advice on bravely choosing to educate creatively and individually. - Lori Seaborg
