UPDATE:  The winner that Random.org chose is Comment #146, Jane!

Jane said…

I actually have an early version of Friendly Chemistry, but would love an updated one. It is such a nonthreatening way to experience Chemistry. My 14 year old who struggles with school, but enjoys science is doing well and my 17 year old, who is a very bright young man with Aspergers who greatly dislikes science, is also doing well. We were all in stitches playing one of the games yesterday.

Randomchemistry12~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Friendly Chemistry has recently edited & updated their curriculum.  To celebrate, they want to send a full curriculum set to one of you!

After looking through a Friendly Chemistry textbook, you’ll soon realize that, hmm, chemistry is a little more interesting than you first thought.  Give it a longer look and you’ll find yourself surprisingly absorbed in elements and molecules.  Then…gather some students,  teach a Friendly Chemistry lesson and you’ll see that chemistry is not only fun, but the kids are asking to have another chemistry class!

Friendlychem

The author, Joey Hajda, describes Friendly Chemistry  like this:

“Friendly Chemistry was written using simple language and a host of analogies to make learning (and teaching!) chemistry easy.  We believe that the chemistry concepts presented in Friendly Chemistry are NOT watered-down.  The concepts are just explained in ways that are readily understood by most learners.  Coupled with these explanations is a host of teaching aids, labs and games which makes the learning concrete and multi-sensory.  Students find the course fun and painless.  Parents often comment, ‘I wish I had had this when I was taking chemistry.   Now it all makes so much sense!'”

How to Learn More:  Visit the Friendly Chemistry site for answers to questions about teaching the program in your homeschool or co-op or for answers to using the program in private or public schools.

Guess what? The publishers want to offer one of you a free set of Friendly Chemistry curriculum, which includes:

  • Student text
  • Teacher text (volumes 1 & 2)
  • Manipulative text (a 74 page booklet to be disassembled by the end user)

Current retail cost is $49.99 for the student edition and $24.99 for each volume of the Teacher’s edition (Two volume set).  The manipulative set retails for $9.99.  Total retail value:  $109.96

We would love to win this one! I looked at it in depth earlier this year but as we live in a semi 3rd world country with a weak currency against the dollar, it’s just not possible to stretch the budget to obtain it. My youngest loves chemistry – she has all sorts of pretend potions and bottles with coloured water and a microscope permanently on her desk, and she asked for a scientist’s white coat for Christmas! Please please please, choose us to win this wonderful, wonderful gift – it would be so appreciated.

Just commented on their Facebook wall…and it’s funny. Here they are, a chemistry-curriculum-making company and they’re from Broken Bow, Nebraska. In 1982, I went on a three-week-long science field trip originating from Broken Bow (it’s meant to be…)

I get frustrated when I realize that I just do not have the resources to use for science. I know that my kids would love more hands on science, but it all seems so expensive when you start gathering all the materials you need to put a lesson together. Also, the planning is just more time than I have right now with all the other subjects.

Well I get frustrated because I believe all things can be taught with the correct sequence and with the correct language. Science books often assume you know things and they also dont begin at the beginning. They could use simpler techniques and many students would really flourish.

I hit the Facebook posting too-
I have difficulty with teaching science because my son LOVES it soooo much. Since it is his favorite, I feel super extra pressure to make sure that it is the best thing we do all day. It requires a lot of prep time and often a lot of materials to make a lesson meaningful. Anyone can mix ingredients but understanding what and why is a bigger task.
At breakfast last week, my budding chemist told the server that he’d like” citric acid and sucrose” to drink- indicating lemonade. How do I keep up with that?? 🙂

I would love to win this. I have a fairly decent science background, but many of the science choices out there for homeschoolers aren’t that great. I feel like I am constantly having to piece things together for them. It would be great to have everything put together in a nice format with manipulatives that they could use.
