Lesson Plans on Oil Spills (and a freebie in your snail mail)

science

28 Mar

DawnThe anniversary of the Gulf Oil Spill is April 20th. We live in an area of the Gulf Coast directly impacted by that spill, so we had quite a roller-coaster summer last year.  Happily, I can tell you that a year later, we don't see any effect of the oil spill. There is no oil on the beaches and our wildlife (including the tourists! =D) is as active as normal.    Dawn, the dishwashing soap company that helped clean our Brown Pelicans last year, has partnered with Discovery Education to create lesson plans on oil spills, specifically on these topics:

  • Investigate Oil Spills Lesson Plan
  • Discover Wildlife Rehabilitation Lesson Plan
  • Save the Wildlife Lesson Plan

How to Get this Freebie:  Visit this Dawn Junior Wildlife Champions page.  The lesson plans are downloadable as pdf files (almost 10 pages each), and in English or Espanol.

For Grades 3-5, especially, but I'd adapt them for all elementary students, and even my older ones.

How to Get a Freebie in Your Snail Mail:  I have no idea what they'll mail us, but Dawn – and the Marine Mammal Center – will send you a gift "for  your classroom" for filling out a survey about the lesson plans.  Look for this graphic on the Dawn Junior Wildlife Champions page (lower right of that page).  Quantities Limited.

Balancing Homeschooling while Working From Home

At times, well-intentioned advice suggests that dedicating an entire day to homeschooling leaves no room for a job during regular hours. This is not necessarily so. My husband and I owned a garden center for a few years while also homeschooling. After that, I had an online business while homeschooling. We did not “only work … Read More about Balancing Homeschooling and Working From Home – a Realistic Approach

making the transition from public school to homeschool

We did what you’re doing, or thinking about doing. Our eldest two went to public school in our little town, and it was just fine, we didn’t have any problems, but I missed them. Also, it was a hassle packing up the baby and toddler to commute the school kids from two different school locations, … Read More about Going from Public School to Home School? Here’s My Advice
