All About Spelling isn’t a – yawn! – workbook method of learning spelling.   Instead, All About Spelling is a hand-on spelling program that will interest every kid in your bunch, as it has in ours…

Using All About Spelling in our schoolroom

The All About Spelling program is logical and organized enough for even me to figure out and use easily with children at three different levels (grades 7, 5, and 3. Our little gal, above, just gets to absorb this year).  The system uses letter tiles (pictured above) and flashcards to teach spelling.

We do all sorts of educational reviews for Freely Educate, and while we only post reviews of products that we think are good enough for at least someone, we don’t always keep the products to use in our own little school. All About Spelling, however, definitely will be staying at home in our schoolroom.  It is solving our problem of poor spellers (they are so very phonetic!) while making the effort as painless as possible for the teacher (me).

Here is a little more about the All About Spelling program from the publishers:”All About Spelling is your clear action plan for teaching spelling. Designed for effective, stress free teaching, the series progresses in a logical, sequential order. Through direct instruction, students learn exactly what they need to know in order to spell well.

The All About Spelling program brings together three pathways to learning – auditory (hearing), visual (seeing), and kinesthetic (touching).  This multisensory approach, combined with a built-in review system and reinforcement activities, ensures that students retain what they learn and understand how to apply it in practical situations.”

Go to the All About Spelling site to learn more about the program and to order a free report called, “The 20 Best Tips for Teaching Spelling.”

Note:  Since we are just now starting out with All About Spelling, we started even our big 13yo 7th grader in Level One.  He’s whizzing through it, as he should, but the reinforcement of the basics is good for him as well as for his 11yo, 5th grade sister.  Our 8yo (3rd grader) also is doing Level One, at a much slower pace.

I was able to go look through the articles, and this one definitely has been the most helpful so far:
What doesn’t work in teaching spelling.
It outlines several things I do not like about the current spelling program I am using, and gives a couple of very good examples/substitute rules.

An article that was extremely helpful to me on the All About Spelling website was Spelling Review: Making it Stick. It talks about how to get spelling words, or anything for that matter, into the long term memory of your child. It suggests much review and repitition until the child gets it and can recall it without thinking much about it. This will be very helpful in our home school.

I just checked out the website and the article about how to teach spelling in a homeschool had a lot of great pointers. I especially like the fact that they are not pushing their product, they just tell you what you should be looking for in a spelling curricullum and how to use which ever one you choose to get the best outcome.

Interesting. My son just participated in a spelling bee last evening, and I was thinking on how I could streamline and logically present a spelling guidance system to him – he too is phonetic, which is good, but it seems to not compute when words are, well, unphonetic. Sign us up!

  97. Rebekah says

    January 13, 2009 at 2:48 PM

Wow, I just looked through a few of the articles on the website, and the one about what doesn’t work while teaching spelling really jumped out at me. This is exactly what we are seeing in our kids! I used to be a ‘formal’ school teacher, and all of these things mentioned in that article are exactly what we were trained to do to teach spelling. Now I am really excited about this opportunity to win this curriculum. Thanks Lori!

All of their articles are pretty good, I ended up reading through them all:). If I have to choose one, I would say that the “What works in teaching spelling” article seems to give a pretty good concise guideline to start from. I hope I win this program, but if not, I would say there is a pretty good chance I will end up buying it!

The article that sounded most interesting is ‘Teaching Spelling With Letter Tiles’.

I’ve actually been receiving their e-mails for little spelling tips to “observe” their methods before purchase but to win win one would be GREAT!

I was just looking at the articles, and the article about spelling activities for kinesthetic learners has lots of ideas that look like they will be really helpful for my family!

This caught my attention, since we’ve tried many other programs and my 14yo still struggles with spelling. Maybe this is our answer. Hope I win. Thank you for the offer.
